Abstract:

In the November 29, 2002 New York Times, Michael Kimmelman noted “THE most ebullient exhibition of the New York art season has arrived . . . in the unlikely guise of a show of hand-stitched quilts from Gee's Bend, Alabama. . . .The quilts, created by poor African American women living in Gee’s Bend were collected by an affluent European American Southern male with connections in the art market. The Quilts of Gee’s Bend and the Art Market examines financial questions that arise when the quilters and Quilts of Gee’s Bend become players in the art market.
