Abstract:

Haynes discusses the history of cooperative economic development among African Americans in Buffalo, NY. He reviews the history and strategies of the Buffalo Cooperative Society in the mid 20th century. Most of the presentation will focus on current activity in Buffalo where Haynes has been involved with the establishment and evaluation of several programs to revitalize Black neighborhoods and teach cooperative economics. He discusses the accomplishments and challenges of the “Conscious Investment Group,” an independent local startup offering leadership and financial training to motivated individuals for joint ownership opportunities; and the “Mondragon Village Association” that purchases and renovates abandoned lower west side and West Village properties; as well as efforts to establish a co-op grocery store.
