Abstract:

In 1516, Pope Leo X excommunicated Duke Francesco Maria della Rovere of Urbino, deprived him of the duchy of Urbino, and replaced him with his nephew Lorenzo de' Medici. This paper examines the background of these dramatic events, focusing particularly on the role of Baldassarre Castiglione, the ducal diplomat in Rome. My goal is to contribute to our knowledge of the political circumstances that informed the first manuscript drafts of the Libro del Cortegiano.
