Abstract:

This paper presents findings from two studies using quotes from lads mags and convicted rapists. Study one found men identified more with rapists’ than with lads mags’ quotes and the context of a lads mags made negative attitudes towards women more acceptable. The acceptance of both types of material was positively associated with upholding sexist attitudes, and acceptance of sexual aggression. Study two results indicated all quotes were found to be equally degrading towards women, and participants were unable to correctly distinguish lads’ mags from rapist’s quotes. Key themes were identified in participants’ explanations to support their decisions about the source of the quotes.
