Abstract:

Despite a long history, few scholars have addressed the treatment of young women by juvenile justice systems. Our study describes the experiences of 100 young women adjudicated in an urban delinquency system. Archival review of court files and open ended interviews allowed us to follow each woman’s story from entry into the system through exit. Prosecutorial upcharging, the interaction of dependency and delinquency, and tremendous incidents of grief and trauma in these women’s lives are discussed, as are surprising insights from the young women about the types of intervention that worked best in their lives-- or might have done.
