Abstract:

It is well known that the use of textbooks and related learning materials can affect the quality of learning. These are critical tools needed to help students develop key competencies as reading and comprehension. They can also provide students access and insight into other cultures, societies and communities.
In this panel, USAID/Education Reform in the Classroom with representatives from the Ministry of Education from Guatemala will present and discuss the actions that are taking place for improving the quality of education in the classroom through the development and validation of textbooks and educational materials. This current effort to improve and enhance textbooks also includes developing attractive learning materials in students’ native language and in Spanish as a second language.
The panelists will describe the work that is taking place for the design, development, alignment and validation of textbooks, including the Ministry of Education’s progress to design a plan creating and validating new learning materials with a bilingual approach.
In addition, this presentation will outline the process of creating a national policy for textbooks and educational materials, the obstacles, and how different stakeholders can collaborate to produce bilingual and monolingual appropriate textbooks and educational materials, and deliver them to all the children.
