Abstract:

Literature related to surviving a trauma indicates that the experience is severely emotional, traumatic, and salient. The sharing of survivors experience provides an avenue for others to gain access to the survivors’ lived experience. This research examines the lived experience of adult survivors of a major natural disaster using a phenomenological approach. Using the criterion sampling method, I recruited 8 adult participants from Kerala, India who survived the tsunami of 2004. Analysis of the qualitative data, using Van Kaam’s method of phenomenological analysis, revealed 6 major themes, including the experience of encountering killer waves, the experience during rescue and relief phase, the experience during recovery process, resources at the personal, family, and community level, obstacles to recovery, and recommendations to improve disaster services. Findings imply that social workers need to engage disaster survivors to choose and implement appropriate recovery strategies in order to foster individual, family, and community recovery. |
