Re-thinking education for XXI Century socialism in Venezuela

Abstract | Word Stems | Keywords | Association | Citation | Similar Titles

Abstract:

Venezuela has arguably been at the forefront of regional moves to elaborate a viable model of "twenty-first century socialism", and efforts to reconstruct mass education in ways that support this political project. This paper identifies and reviews the key aspects of Venezuela's educational reforms as part of its "Bolivarian Revolution", and assesses available evidence on its achievements with respect to expanded access, equity, and the intended formation of citizens for the twenty-fist century socialist project. Documentary and recent interview data are analysed to respond to these questions, informed by world-systems analysis that situates the Venezuelan and wider regional political projects in the context of the capitalist world-economy and its historical development. The paper concludes by identifying and elaborating the struggle between established models of and approaches to education, including those under the banner of ‘socialist education’, and more radical alternatives focused on popular and critical education outside of traditional educational institutions, within the world-system context.
