Abstract:

The most common approach to measuring political network size in sample surveys – the “name generator” approach in the GSS and ANES, among others – normally constrains network size measurement to no more than six individuals, in part due to the high demands of these questions on respondents. We argue that this constraint hides the presence of network “hubs” – those rare individuals who have very large networks. Theory and research on social networks indicates that hubs are extremely important in the dissemination of information and influence. We argue for the importance of observing and studying political network hubs. Using multiple data sets and alternative measurement approaches, we reveal that political network hubs exist and can be identified with a simple summary network measure. We also demonstrate that political network hubs are politically and communicatively different in many ways compared to individuals who have more typical network sizes.
