A comparative education textbook for undergraduate students providing an education which truly liberates

Abstract:

Comparative Education figures strongly in undergraduate Education (teacher education) programmes in several countries. Despite this prominent place, an introductory text is lacking, as is clear from the list of textbooks used in Comparative Education published in Wolhuter et al. (2008: 345-360) a or from the list appearing on the website of CIECAP (Comparative and International Education Course Archive Project, http://www.luc.edu/education/cceciecap/index.shtml ). While a widely used Comparative Education, Kubow and Fossum (2007) for students on graduate level do exist, a similar widely used introductory text for undergraduate students making their first acquaintance with the field does not exist. This need was identified in discussions in past International Conferences on Comparative Education and Teacher Training (i.e. the predecessor of this current conference) and a decision was taken to write such a book. This paper reports on progress regarding that project.

The project was also inspired out of concern that Comparative Education has developed lately into a rather clinically cold endeavour – a fixation with paradigms and with the handling of education as a mere lever to effect societal changes such as economic growth. The authors have therefore thought to take the concept of the “creative spirit” and make it the central hub of the textbook. The paper also clarifies this concept and its employment as a keystone in the development of a Comparative Education textbook.
