Abstract:

In this article, the idea of Welsh identity is explored; specifically, how Welsh identities are tied to connotations of Welsh accents, and how Welsh accents are portrayed in British media. Literature pertaining to the definition of Welsh accents, hegemony, the social psychology of language use, media predominance in creating representations of cultural groups, and the history of Welsh marginalization in the United Kingdom are reviewed for clarity in background information. A variety of British television serials are reviewed, and analyzed for the linguistic characteristics in showcasing aspects of Welsh culture. Results show that while Welsh accent portrayals in media are typically negative and denote low social standing, the trend is changing. Both media and cultural groups in Wales have begun the anti-hegemonic process of reclaiming Welsh identity in a positive light.
