Abstract:

The educational program studied has more than twenty years of existence in the Polytechnic School of Health Joaquim Venâncio the Oswald Cruz Foundation, receiving over the years more than one thousand High School students. It is considered a pioneer program for being the first Brazilian program allowing High School students to participate in research laboratories activities. The goal of this research has been to examine both the views researchers and their former students about academic work apprenticeships. Thus, all the subjects involved have performed activities in a Health research institution in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. These activities are related to the fields of Biomedicine, Human and Social sciences. The theoretical framework of this research is grounded in two major fields. The first is related to the history of vocation and professions and they relate to gender, age and class. The second is about the links between the inequalities of Brazilian educational system and the governmental policies that give incentives to scientific training at High School and undergraduate level. The methodology employed is qualitative and individual interviews were conducted with fifteen researchers (ten women and five men) and thirty-four alumni (twenty-three women and nine men). The results indicate in which ways academic work is perceived similarly and differently among the actors involved due to work class, gender and age differences. The results will be discussed in light of some narratives of the interviewed and the literature.
