Factors affecting provision of quality education for refugees: The case of Dadaab Refugee Camps, Kenya

Abstract:

In the last decade alone there have been several conflicts and disasters globally.Kenya has not been spared either, information based on data collated by the multi-sectoral assessment team from the Kenya Red Cross, the United Nations of Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the Kenya Ministry of Internal Affairs and several sector leads from the World Food Program (WHO) and Save The Children reported massive flooding severely affected four main districts in Kenya’s coast province, Tana River, Kilifi, Kwale and Ijara in 2006 that is Internal disaster. In regard to external disaster/conflict,Kenya in the last two or so decades, has had to be home for many refugees seeking a safe place from the conflicts in their own countries.
This paper seeks to explore the challenges of providing quality education for refugees in Dadaab refugee camps. The purpose of the case study was to establish the challenges facing refugee education in Dadaab refugee camps in Kenya. Data was collected by field visit which included observation and personal interviews.
The main research findings showed that the quality of education in these refugee camps is wanting due to several factors such as overcrowding, lack of trained teacher among others.
