Challenging violence against girls in schools: Insights from a baseline study in schools in Kenya, Ghana and Mozambique

Abstract:

This paper will discuss the cross-country analysis of findings from a baseline study of violence against girls in and around schools in Kenya, Ghana and Mozambique. This study has been carried out as part of a collaborative multi-partner project led by ActionAid International, and aims to inform advocacy, community intervention and research concerned with helping schools and communities to challenge violence and the gendered inequalities that create the conditions for violence.
The research examined the political, socio-economic and legislative contexts, patterns of physical, sexual and psychological violence, and gendered dynamics of schools and communities. It used quantitative and qualitative methods, and involved primary schoolgirls and boys, girls out of school, teachers, parents, school management, community leadership and district officials.
In this paper, we will consider the findings, focusing particularly on opportunities for girls and their communities to challenge violence and gendered inequalities in and around the school environment. The study found that few girls reported violence, that follow up action was rare, and that the meanings of violence were contested. We will argue that intervening to combat violence against girls entails work at multiple levels, both aiming to address structural inequalities and working with girls and their communities on subjective meanings surrounding violence, gender and identity. We will share strategies the project is putting in place in response to these findings, including how it is working with girls, schools and communities to contest violence.
