Abstract:

The USAID Ethiopia Education Program focuses on enhancing quality and equity in the primary education system by: improving teachers’ capacity; providing textbooks and learning materials to support instruction; strengthening parents and community involvement in school management; increasing primary school enrollment and retention with a special focus on girls and Muslim communities; expanding non-formal education for children and adults; and improving the planning and management capacity of the primary education system at national, regional, district, and community levels.

Studies conducted at different times show the challenges of English language instruction ranges from content overload to poor quality of the teaching and learning materials and the inability to effectively apply learner-centered teaching methods.

To respond to the above challenges, new English language textbooks and teacher’s guides for grades 1-4 and 6-8 were developed with the support from the USAID Washington’s Africa Education Initiative, Textbooks and Learning Materials Program (TLMP) as a collaborative effort with Alabama A&M University and the Ethiopian Ministry of Education (MoE). In collaboration with the MoE, AAMU has provided the methodology and American Institutes of Research (AIR) the logistics for teacher training on the use of the new textbooks and teacher’s guides. To date, approximately 50 Master trainers, 900 trainers of teachers (TOT) and 75,000 grade 1-4 and 6-8 English teachers were trained on the use of research-based, effective literacy strategies to use with the new textbooks.
