Abstract:

Research based, culturally based textbooks are important to teaching and learning. One component of the USAID Africa Education Initiative is to improve the quality of primary education in Sub-Saharan African countries through the development of textbooks and learning materials that promote learning through effective practice as part of the Textbooks and Learning Materials Program (TLMP). To achieve this goal, Alabama A&M University is partnered with the Ministry of Education in Ethiopia.

Textbooks drive instruction and learning. It is not only important for students to have textbooks and learning materials, it also is critical that textbooks deliver content to facilitate teaching and learning and reflect the culture of a country. To do this, best practices in terms of current scientific-based research on second language learning acquisition and strategy-based instruction were incorporated into English for Ethiopia textbooks for grades 1-4 and 6-8. These textbooks and teacher’s guides

Also crucial to learning is the pedagogy used by teachers to deliver the textbook content through meaningful engagement. English for Ethiopia Teacher’s Guides promote that engagement through pedagogy which reflects the Ethiopian culture in combination with the National Curriculum requirements by using an active communicative approach. The Ministry of Education and the TLMP team felt that teacher professional development was crucial to the effective use of books. Because of the number of teachers and the vast geography of Ethiopia, a cascade model was used effectively to deliver professional development in strategic instruction. Results of a follow-up study verify the effectiveness of this model.
