Career aspirations in the transnational fields: The case of adolescent-immigrants from Asia

Abstract:

More and more American public schools serve adolescent-immigrants from Asia, those who emigrated to attend public schools in the U.S. Some of them plan to stay in U.S. for adulthood, some plan to journey back to their homeland after college. The proposed research focused on the career aspirations of adolescent-immigrants from Korea, China, Vietnam, and Thailand in a comparative framework. Common to these students is their decision to attend U.S. high schools s to learn English and get a better education. The preliminary data of their cultural experience show the heavy involvements in co-ethnic community and the homeland culture (Louie, 2001; Zhou & Kim 2006), as affirmed in the term, "segmented assimilation" (Portes & Rumbaut, 2001). This study pays particular attention to the career aspirations of these adolescent immigrants, and the way in which their schooling experiences intersect with the prospect of their entry into U.S. culture/society. Central to the analysis is: For what reasons do some want to back to their homeland and for what reason do others envision their adulthood in the U.S.? The process of "segmented assimilation" provides a useful framework to analyze the transnational trajectory of their career decision (Suarez-Orozco, 2004; Waters, 2002). Using qualitative research methods, the research aims to unravel the multifaceted ways that the career visions of adolescent-immigrants are narrated. By comparing different countries, i.e., Korea, China, Vietnam and Thailand, the analysis will offer insights into how the conditions of the homeland country are factored into their career visions.
