R. Freeman Butts and the historical imagination in educational research

Abstract | Word Stems | Keywords | Association | Citation | Similar Titles

Abstract:

Butts considered history of education a basic, “foundational” field in both teacher education and in educational research, including in the field of comparative and international education. In fact CIES first began as an offshoot of History of Education, through the efforts of its founders. Despite the unfortunate decline of an emphasis on “Foundations” in many universities, history nevertheless continues to provide the basic context in comparative and international education research; indeed all that has emerged globally in contemporary education, whether it be policy analysis, or economic development theory or “philosophy of education,” is inescapably historical. History is both local and global, and like evolutionary theory in biology, is a science of the emergent: history views socio-cultural phenomena as emergent and itself reflexively emergent; what constitutes “education”--especially because the continual reinterpretation of “education” itself looks to the future of new generations.
