Abstract:

The American community college was founded more than 100 years ago. It has served to educate and indeed liberate many students who otherwise would not have had access to a college education. The first community college in India was founded in Madras in 1996 and supported by US community colleges, US Agency for International Development, and the Jesuit community in India. Its mission was to serve the undereducated and underpriviledged members of the community, primarily women and minorities. Early converts to the community college system, which now numbers more than 500 institutions, responded well to the concept of open access in a country where class and caste have been barriers to education. In what ways have community colleges in India liberated underprivileged populations in India? We will define liberation through education by examining accessibility and affordability and providing opportunities for education and second chances at furthering education. Our methodology will be to review past and current research on the topic, gather data through personal interviews and conducting focus groups to determine exactly how Indian community colleges supporting the process of liberation for the underserved populations in India. Interviews will be conducted in March in country and findings of our research study will be incorporated into this presentation.
