New developments in international university ranking systems

Abstract | Word Stems | Keywords | Association | Citation | Similar Titles

Abstract:

Globalization is making a great cultural, economic, and political impact,
and its impact on higher education is substantial. In the past two decades,
higher education has been going through a dramatic change, and one indicator
of this change is the growing importance of international ranking systems.
The first such system was the Shanghai Jiatong University (the Shangahi
index) and it was soon followed by the London Times Higher Education World
University Rankings. These two systems have captured widespread attention,
and much of the attention has been critical. Recently, new ranking systems
have begun to be formulated, and this paper explores what is happening, the
criteria being developed for new rankings, and asks whether they are
improving the process or adding to the negative attention being given them.
