Liberal arts education in Russia

Abstract:

Liberal Arts education currently plays a relatively minor role within the Russian system of higher education. Indeed, a Google search under ‘liberal education’ (liberalnoe obrazovnie) in Russia yields reveals relatively few hits, the most prominent of which is a Russian translation of one of the author’s articles, ‘What a Liberal Arts Education is… and is Not.’
The thin footprint of liberal arts education in Russia, however, does not mean that it plays no role, nor that it has no future. Indeed, given the multiple transitions and challenges that the Russian system of higher education is facing, there are many reasons to believe that it will play an increasingly prominent role over the next decade.
This paper will explore the current impact of liberal arts education in Russian secondary and higher education and explore the future potential impact in higher education. It will be argued that in spite of slow developments that there might be substantial opportunities in the growth of liberal education in Russia in the coming years.
