Cultural constructions of difference in Puerto Rican education

Abstract | Word Stems | Keywords | Association | Citation | Similar Titles

Abstract:

The primary question guiding my research is: How can we understand the conditions that make possible the cultural construction of difference in Puerto Rican education at the turn of the twentieth century? I will attempt to answer this question by considering the system of reason and its limits that orders and classifies difference in contemporary studies of schooling, by drawing on research related to disabilities and the politics of representation in education. My theoretical discussion will be both philosophical and historical, and will explicate on how the notion of difference can be studied, by drawing on the work of Deleuze, Foucault, and others who provide a way to revision difference. Lastly, I will discuss how such a conceptualization can provide an interpretive way to think about the possibilities of modern social science and eugenics that become visible in Puerto Rican education.
