Abstract:

Since 2009, each of the students in Hong Kong is required to, in the 3 years of new senior secondary school curricula, take Liberal Studies as one of the compulsory core subjects, which will be the necessary criterion of university entry. As a goal, the subject is intended to help students developing the ability of independent learning and the technique of thinking across subjects, and nurture them to respect pluralism of cultures and views, and be the critical, reflective and independent thinkers.

Will this goal ever become a reality? In order to understand how the frontline Panel Heads of Liberal Studies implement the curriculum in practice, the author has conducted a narrative research. The research questions are:
1. What are the Panel Heads’ perceptions of critical thinking?
2. How do they implement the perceptions to the preparation for teaching in their schools?

Six Panel Heads of Liberal Studies were interviewed in this research came from various secondary schools with different abilities of student intakes. The author discovers that public examination is still the core concern of most of these participants, those will not be easily measured in the assessment are marginalized. Liberal Studies
is impressive only in appearance. Critical thinking, is it just an impossible dream in Hong Kong education?
