Abstract:

Over the last twenty years qualitative researchers have employed a variety of research designs to study students’ perceptions of their learning qualitative research experiences. To date no one had reviewed these primary research studies to discover how researchers have approached this qualitative research education phenomenon, so the researchers utilized a Primary Research Appraisal Tool modified from Paterson, Thorne, Canam, and Jillings’ 2001 Meta-Study to assess design decisions and performance in 23 primary studies of students’ experiences learning qualitative research. From their examination of the primary researchers’ choices of (a) Qualitative research learning objectives, (b) Units of learning, (c) Learning or teaching orientations, and (d) Research designs, the investigators suggest these studies represent a wide range of transparency and coherence regarding detail, clarity, and connections within and across the four appraisal areas. Based upon these findings, the researchers offer ways to enhance the conceptualization and reporting of this research.
