Cyber-bullying, cyber-libel or cyber-jokes: Girls and social media

Abstract | Word Stems | Keywords | Association | Citation | Similar Titles

Abstract:

This will be a panel presentation relating to emerging educational, ethical and legal issues concerning girls’ use of social media. The
presentation will be led by the Principal Investigator of the McGill Project on Cyber-bullying. As part of our work on cyber-bullying and social media, there is significant concern over the lines between joking, lying, gossip, sexting and where they cross over to criminal and civil liability, particularly as they relate to sexting and the borderline of child pornography and sexual harassment. On the other hand we also look at how social media empowers and liberates girls and ways to help them realize the line between public and private space, and the impact of crossing the line on impulse or without knowing the consequences of sharing private information with peers and others. Girls online use is complex because there are so many contradictions and tensions but also educational benefits. The panel will address various aspects of these complexities.
