The New Catch-22: Veterans and the Stigma of PTSD

Abstract | Word Stems | Keywords | Association | Citation | Similar Titles

Abstract:

Through personal accounts of my 20 year career in the U.S. Army, I have attempted to locate and to bring meaning to the current issues surrounding Veteran's struggles with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and the issues of social stigma that prevent those who might require mental health services from seeking them out. Through the use of short personal vignettes, issues are presented that are found in the current literature of the Department of Veteran Affairs, mental health literature and through the stories of veterans themselves. This paper looks at Goffman's work on Stigma as well as current articles on the communcation of PTSD and mental illness for veterans.
