Marketing and promoting higher education in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates

Abstract:

As Bereday (1964) once said, comparative education research, in its most rudimentary form, begins with juxtaposition. When juxtaposing contemporary trends concerning higher education in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates---both of which currently provide substantial support to market and promote higher education development for students---differences abound in terms of approach, strategic 'cultural' foresight, openness, and outreach. Does Saudi Arabia's practice of promoting massive student mobility mirror that of United Arab Emirates' acceptance of foreign higher education providers on their shores? What are the respective dimensions of academic quality standards and how do league tables influence offshore student placement? Among other things, this discussion attempts to address the differences in the way higher education is marketed and promoted in these two countries and the reasons for the differences identified.
