Abstract:

As cosmopolitan ideologies and programmatic concerns overdetermine our thinking, global dissent and discipline increasingly appear as political encounters. To make material sense of the spectacle of global politics, we have to look into the situated actions of actually existing social forces. Only then can we begin to understand how global subjects may be making themselves on the terrain of the world economy, and how they may be getting made. What is at stake is nothing less than the possibility of presence on the terrain of the world economy. ‘Global discipline and dissent in the longue durée’ is part of a broader theoretical project informed by historical research on a wide variety of movements of resistance against world ordering --- from slave and coolie revolts at the beginning of the 19th century to IMF riots and gas and water wars at the end of the twentieth. In it, I come to distinguish between two modes of relation to the world economy. In creative severance, social life gets resolved before being taken to the world economy and a docile global subject gets made that carries a false, reified, sense of itself. In the dialectics of presence, the whole of everyday life gets taken unresolved to the world economy.
