Abstract:

The goals of this paper are conceptual and empirical. One is to systematize a proposal: synthesis as a central role for IR active learning in the face of the huge complexities brought by the ways of 21st century global governance. The other is to share the ongoing experiences in the Brazilian academy with respect to dealing with such an important pedagogical and practical question. Synthesis can be defined as the ability of proposing effective solutions for complex challenges based on smart, flexible, and constructive collaboration from different specialization areas of knowledge. The acknowledgement of this proposal in teaching and researching in Brazilian IR can be reach through an auto critique of the promises and realizations of this multidisciplinary field and of our own practices as professors and institutions. The two interrelated goals are contextualized by the explosion of IR courses in Brazil in the last 15 years, the comparatively low imposition of hard standards to its teaching, the open and hot debate about the applicability and appropriateness of Global/American Theories or national/regional concepts, and underneath all the other aspects, complexity and globalization in such themes like AIDS, drug trafficking, climate crisis, nonproliferation, financial crisis, development, and others.
