How Are the Cross-Strait Proper Names Diverse? |

This study probes into the differences of proper names used in Taiwan and in Mainland China. Lexical meaning and morphological structure of the proper names are investigated based on their typological characterization. The research results can be applied in Chinese teaching material compilation and assessment making.
This paper studies the cross-strait differences of the proper names used in Taiwan and in Mainland China. The proper names are classified into seven groups, personal names (e.g., names of persons, gods), place names (e.g., names of countries, cities, streets, mountains, organizations and institutions, etc.), time names (e.g., names of dynasties and festivals, etc.), people and language names, product names (e.g., names of articles, books, food, brands, songs, programs and theories, etc.), art names (e.g., names of different types of Chinese Kongfu, dance, techniques, prizes and games, etc.), and event names (e.g., names of wars, meetings, treaties, and activities, etc.). This paper investigates the differences of these proper names used between Taiwan and Mainland China, accounts for the diversity and proposes suggestions of making tests and compiling Chinese teaching materials.
First, this study observes seven series of basic Chinese teaching materials published in Mainland China and two series of basic Chinese teaching materials published in Taiwan. From the materials proper names are retrieved, initially classified by their main lexical meaning and pragmatic function, and then subcategorized by their spatial and temporal makeup, morphological source and structure. Second, proper names listed in dictionaries published in Taiwan and in Mainland China are compared and analyzed to refine the previous classification and analysis. The Modern Chinese Cross-Strait Dictionary is consulted as well. Third, proper names extracted from Taiwan and Mainland China copra, including traditional and simplified Chinese data in Sketch Engine (http://www.sketchengine.co.uk/) are used to examine the conclusion obtained from the previous two stages. Finally, pedagogical consideration and suggestions are proposed based on Praetor (1967)’s hierarchies of difficulties and Teng (1998, 2003)’s principles of sequencing pedagogical grammar.
The names that were currently emerged, derived from translation, attached with a type name, related to local history and culture show a greater diversity. The names of products signal a tendency for Taiwan names abiding by hypotaxis and China names parataxis. Pedagogical orders are arranged from popularity, frequency and difficulties. |
