Abstract:

The need for analysis of ethnic nationalism and its radical manifestations among young Russian citizens, representing different ethnic groups became obvious after the mass nationalistic action in Manege Square in Moscow in December 2010.
My paper is based on the researches conducted in 2010 - 2011 in Moscow and other regions of Central Russia. The object to study was the members of nationalistic political organizations, positioning themselves as the advocates of the Russian ethnos against immigrants. In order to identify both rational and irrational aspects of national identifications qualitative methods were used.
It was found out, that the roots of ethnic nationalism in contemporary Russia could be found in the late 80-s and the 90-s, period of rapid destruction of the Soviet identity, which was not compensated by identification of the Russian civil nation around new national values, images or symbols. As a result the process of identification obtained an ethno-political sense.
Today the substantial part of young citizens in central Russia (especially in Moscow and large cities) identify themselves as ethnic Russians than the citizens of the Russian state.
The research revealed the system of images and symbols, based on cultural and historical memory, the strongest of which was the model “we – they” containing both ethnic and political sense.
