Publication Type: Conference Paper/Unpublished Manuscript Abstract: I will compare and contrast the theoretical assumptions behind the traditions of projective drawing tests and art-based diagnostic drawing tests as they are used in psychology and art therapy for assessment of personality traits and emotional states. My goal is to show the paradigmatic contradiction between the clinical use of drawings as assessment devices and the inherently transformative function of creative self-expression. I will discuss the positivist tradition of psychological assessment in the light of the post-positivist approach to the drawing process as the scaffolding of the process, the outcomes, and the dialog about them. I will focus on the interactive and generative function of visual “metalogue” (Gregory Bateson) where the structure of the drawings and the nature of the dialogue about those drawings are transformational to the self and affect the content of subsequent drawings and generate subsequent insights into the self.
