School Crime and Safety Surveys: A Wealth of Information for the School Crime Researcher

Abstract | Word Stems | Keywords | Association | Citation | Similar Titles

Abstract:

School crime and student victimization has proven to have negative impacts on student’s academic achievement and psychological and social development. The research community, parents, school staff, and policymakers need to understand the extent, nature, and content of the problem in order to effectively combat school crime and provide a safe school environment for children. The tools which enable us to gain a better understanding are school crime and safety surveys. School crime and safety surveys are essential to measure progress toward safer schools. The annual Indicators of School Crime and Safety report produced jointly by the National Center for Education Statistics and the Bureau of Justice Statistic is a rich source of information related to school crime and safety that presents most recent data available. The report is based on a variety of independent data sources, which will be introduced and discussed. Each survey has unique features that taken together provide a broad perspective on crime and safety at schools. Examples of the surveys that will be presented are the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance survey, the National Crime Victimization Survey and its supplement the School Crime Supplement, and the School Survey on Crime and Safety.
