The Relationship between Prenatal Testosterone and Adult Psychopathic Personality

Abstract:

There is increasing evidence that the second to fourth finger length ratio (2D:4D) serves as a marker of prenatal testosterone exposure. Low 2D:4D ratios, which are more frequently observed amongst males, reflect higher prenatal testosterone. 2D:4D ratios are negatively correlated with multiple male-typical traits, including low empathy, high sensation-seeking, and superior sports ability. The present study investigated the relationship between adult 2D:4D ratios and psychopathic personality amongst a community and undergraduate sample in Philadelphia (n=89). Initial findings from the first phase of data collection indicate that 2D:4D was negatively correlated with psychopathic personality, as well as with fearlessness and impulsive non-conformity subscales of psychopathic personality. Additionally, amongst a high social adversity group, low 2D:4D ratios were related to the cold-heartedness psychopathy subscale. Currently, data are being collected on 100 additional subjects. Results from this data collection will be used to update the initial analyses to increase power. This study builds upon existing research by incorporating a biosocial perspective into the study of prenatal testosterone and provides initial support for a neurodevelopmental hormonal perspective of psychopathic personality.
