Abstract:

Universities provide a leadership role by developing and mobilizing knowledge and innovation to meet societal needs. In fulfilling this mission, universities can also serve as agents of sustainable change and development, as members of the communities in which they are situated.

The University of British Columbia, Okanagan campus has developed many campus and community projects to further this aim. A Sustainable Community Development Internal Grant pilot underpins a unique partnership between the campus and the City of Kelowna. The grant provides a means for faculty members and students to engage with members of the community of interest and City staff to develop and implement projects and research to meet key sustainability issues within the community, such as sustainable water use, sustainable transportation and social sustainability.

The purpose of this paper is to describe the University of British Columbia Okanagan's sustainability commitments, action plans and outcomes, with a focus on innovative initiatives, including the community development grant and its components; the models and frameworks that guide our directions; and project outcomes. In doing so, it will provide a real-world example of the application of sustainability concepts and methods that leverage faculty expertise, student learning, diverse community interests and participation of all stakeholders throughout the process.
This paper will also provide an outline for sustainable community development that other universities can apply within their own communities to help meet and overcome sustainability challenges that face our world today.
