Abstract:

Today, sustainability in higher education is permeating beyond conventional green practices into purchasing, spending, and investment decisions. It is seen as an opportunity to minimize costs, reduce negative impacts, and maximize benefits at an enterprise level. Purchasing decisions present a unique opportunity for universities to collaborate with businesses and vendors who share the same commitment to sustainability. Annually, West Virginia University spends millions of dollars on goods and services. This presentation will focus on an office supplies procurement strategy set within the context of maximizing utility and value for the entire campus community. By incorporating an array of sustainable attributes, this institutional procurement model gives appropriate consideration to economic, environmental, and social elements of sustainability. Annual data gathered on WVU’s most frequently purchased OEM office products was analyzed. Environmentally preferred product alternatives were indentified for more than 300 items. A cost analysis of environmentally preferred product alternatives revealed an opportunity to reduce costs on more than 1/3 of WVU’s office products spend. Co-marketing plans to win participation of the non-mandated end user community will be explored. Also, presented as part of this paper is a brief overview of similar sustainable procurement initiatives at two other institutions.
