That professor, a lecturer named Charles Callan Tansill, suggested she call the Czech embassy to get an interview with the chief ambassador’s wife. 17 As Frederick told it many times in her life, the person who answered the phone asked her in what media outlet it would be published. “That depends on how good it is,” she responded. (She told one reporter who interviewed her that she may have drawn the attention of that secretary because she had mistaken her for the actress Pauline Frederick, who was popular during the 1920s.) 18 That first interview was published in the Washington Star and led to more interviews with diplomat’s wives and a weekly column called Women and Diplomacy, for which she was paid $10 per column.
