Abstract:

AASHE's STARS program is a valuable resource for planning and implementing a campus sustainability program. Our campus worked with the STARS pilot program and used the organizational structure of that program as an outline for our campus Sustainability Plan. After our plan was approved by our Board of Trustees we utilized STARS 1.0 during 2010 to create a baseline for our campus that could be revisited as our plan is implemented. Accordingly, we organized our Sustainability Management Advisory Committee into three working groups, corresponding to the three areas of STARS: Education and Research (ER), Operations (OP), and Planning, Administration and Engagement (PAE). Each of these groups was charged with reviewing the progress we were making toward meeting our sustainability-related goals and recommending revisions to the plan based on new data, new technologies and accumulated experience. By utilizing STARS we have been able to identify a number of areas for development. As a result of our planning we have made some significant strides, a few examples of which are highlighted here. The ER group initiated a program for enhancing sustainability across the curriculum. The OP task group has metered all buildings for utilities and is developing a building by building energy and water use reporting system. The PAE group launched a week long City-wide Sustainability Festival during October of 2010. Our next challenge is to integrate sustainability into the fabric of our institution and we believe that STARS will allow us to monitor our progress towards that goal. |
