The pregnancy of “Skinny Moms” for Sale!: Representations of Celebrity Moms’ Pregnancies in Korean Online Media
Unformatted Document Text:  “Skinny Moms” - 10 (14 Oct. 2008, NewsEn). “A slim waist that is the same as before pregnancy (Hee-Sun Kim)” (3 Sep. 2008, My Daily). “Do-Yeon Jeon is still thin and it is hard to believe that she is a mother of a child” (19 Sep. 2008, Sports Donga). “Yun-A Sohng, are you really pregnant? Her figure is just the same as she was” (29 Dec. 2009, Star News). In the examples above, pregnancy becomes something that is better when it is difficult to detect. Changes caused by pregnancy are considered as abnormal. Pregnancy is viewed as ruining a woman‟s body, and those celebrities are seen as successful in preventing the damage caused by pregnancy. “With black hot pants and a striped T-shirt, she (So-Young Koh) is so incredibly stylish that it is hard to believe that she is almost due” (23 Aug. 2010, Sport Chosun). “Seung-Yeon Lee, seven months pregnant, wearing a tight mini-skirt and T-shirt, is showing off her still beautiful figure” (12 June 2009, Today Korea). Therefore, being able to wear tight-fitting dress during pregnancy is a symbol of her competence as a beautiful woman. Undoubtedly, it is not what every woman can do. It is attributed to the celebrities‟ good genes. They never gain weight though they eat as much as other women do. “She (Hee-Sun Kim) eats a lot, but still has a good shape” (16 Jan. 2009, Arts News). In this context, the flatter one‟s pregnant stomach is, the more beautiful she is. The size of the mother‟s stomach during pregnancy is now a new standard of beauty. The smaller, the better. “Seung-Yeon Lee is seven months pregnant but her stomach does not stick out much” (12 Jun. 2009, Health Korea). “Four-month pregnant Do-Yeon Jeon, her stomach does not stick out much” (26 Aug. 2008, News En). Second, online articles focus on how thin the female celebrities‟ post-partum bodies are and how fast they get back to their shape. “Just three days after her delivery, Young-Ae Lee is showing off her smooth and beautiful skin.” (25 Feb. 2011, TV Report) “Yun-A Oh, who gave a birth to a baby boy in 2007, shows off her beautifully toned, curvaceous body, and makes female viewers frustrated…slim waistline and Barbie doll-like legs achieved by thorough postpartum care and exercise” (6 Jan. 2010, Korea Economy). “Do-Yeon Jeon, clearer S-line after delivery” (24 Jun. 2010, Star News).
