Battered into Prostitution: From Intimate Partner Violence into Sex Trafficking

Abstract | Word Stems | Keywords | Association | Citation | Similar Titles

Abstract:

Researchers have previously noted similarities in the exploitative and oppressive relational dynamics commonly observed in Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) and forced prostitution or sex trafficking. This case report demonstrates how an escalation in economic and sexual exploitation in the form of sex trafficking may emerge within the context of a long-standing violent and abusive intimate partner relationship. A review of the increasingly abusive relationship along with the psychologically compromised profile of an archetypal survivor of IPV ultimately coerced into prostitution suggests that the consequential psychosocial impairments may compromise the ability to escape the situation and to evade exploitation in prostitution. Implications for such victims will be discussed in relation to the Trafficking Victims Protection Act.
