The student journalist: Roles of the scholastic press in the 21st Century
Unformatted Document Text:  Scholastic press roles 23 additional insight. At the beginning to this paper, the Freedom House free press rankings were introduced. These rankings provide useful information in understanding the variation in press freedom across the world. A similar system to classify schools as more free or less free could be useful in the future study of scholastic press freedom. Future research should continue to look at the normative roles of the high school press, as well as how stakeholders view those roles. Moreover, normative roles develop because of the needs of a community, so studying community and cultural characteristics provides additional insight into why a school administration views the scholastic press in a certain way. Understanding these roles is vital to a wider view of the kinds of environments that are fostering or hindering student expression.
