Understanding Support for Internet Censorship in China: An Elaboration of the Theory of Reasoned Action

Alpha coefficient was .76 for the first factor, and .55 for the second. The third being a single item factor, we decided to exclude it from analysis as well. In the end, a two-factor structure with four items (submissive and aggressive) entered the equation for analysis (Table 1). ---------------------- Table 1 about here ----------------------- Confucianism family ideology was measured on 9-point scales anchored with “entirely disagree” (1) and “entirely agree” (9) by a single question: “I have been making decisions for important things by myself since my childhood”. Evaluation of the Chinese Communist Party was measured by four items on 7-point scales ranging from “strongly disagree” (1) to “strongly agree” (7). Illustrative questions are: “It is a great honor to join the Party”, and “I have been dreaming of becoming a member of the Party”. Principal Component Factor Analysis produced a single factor, with an alpha coefficient of .94. With the exception of behavioral intention (i.e., signing a petition), all other variables in the model were measured using an 11-point scale ranging from “strongly disagree” (1) to “strongly agree” with 6 as the middle point. The third-person perception measures contained six questions: 1) “I think the website harms state stability”; 2) “I think my closest friend/ classmates will think the website harms state stability”. Items from friends and classmates measured the factor of others. With respect to the operationalization of the perceptual difference for the test of TPE, difference scores and Profile Similarity Indices (PSIs) have been seen by many

and .55 for the second. The third being a single item factor, we decided to exclude it
from analysis as well. In the end, a two-factor structure with four items (submissive

Table 1 about here
-----------------------
Confucianism family ideology was measured on 9-point scales anchored with
“entirely disagree” (1) and “entirely agree” (9) by a single question: “I have been
making decisions for important things by myself since my childhood”.
Evaluation of the Chinese Communist Party was measured by four items on
7-point scales ranging from “strongly disagree” (1) to “strongly agree” (7). Illustrative
questions are: “It is a great honor to join the Party”, and “I have been dreaming of
becoming a member of the Party”. Principal Component Factor Analysis produced a
single factor, with an alpha coefficient of .94.
With the exception of behavioral intention (i.e., signing a petition), all other
variables in the model were measured using an 11-point scale ranging from “strongly
disagree” (1) to “strongly agree” with 6 as the middle point.
The third-person perception measures contained six questions: 1) “I think the
website harms state stability”; 2) “I think my closest friend/ classmates will think the
website harms state stability”. Items from friends and classmates measured the factor
of others.
With respect to the operationalization of the perceptual difference for the test of
TPE, difference scores and Profile Similarity Indices (PSIs) have been seen by many
