Abstract:

Television journalism shapes our understanding of the world via geographic cues that correspond to news coverage of select places. Prior research shows national perspectives constrain this mental map. Less clear is how transnational newscasts “map” the world. This study recreates the spatial terrain of French and German newscast content as well as that of transnational French-German channel Arte, probing for signs of a broader European or global journalistic outlook in the latter.
