Abstract:

Based on the Ponderosa and Piedmont Projects the first Prairie Project workshop was held in the summer of 2010. This two-day workshop drew together thirty faculty members from diverse fields across the university to learn about environmental issues and sustainability and create a body of faculty dedicated to developing curriculum that addresses global issues and local sustainability challenges. The Prairie Project focuses on curricular change, to support faculty intellectual development to address these urgent societal issues.
One of the outcomes of the Prairie Project was the design and implementation of a one-day workshop for graduate students to include them in the cohort of sustainability fellows on campus. Graduate students are on the front lines of innovation and open to concepts that break the mold of existing practices. They are our future leaders in the struggle to achieve sustainability in the face of challenging environmental, economic and societal needs and are poised to impact the next generation of students through teaching and practice. By providing the opportunity for graduate students to join the Prairie Project fellows, a new and innovative model was created for extending the impact of the conversation about sustainability across the curriculum, to the next generation of faculty and practitioners.
This one day workshop includes presentations by local and global experts in sustainability as well as small and large group activities, an open discussion and other activities. This presentation will outline the concept, process and desired outcomes for developing a one-day workshop on sustainability for graduate students. |
