Abstract:
|
The initiative for sustainability at Macalester College took an unusual institutional turn in 2008, with the formation of the Sustainability Student Worker Network. The Network is a working group composed of student workers in a variety of departments across the Macalester campus, including in the largest two arms of the administration: operations and academics. Departments allow a regular student worker to spend some or all their weekly hours on sustainability projects. Over 25 students in 9 departments across campus take part in the process. The sustainability student workers are kept in regular contact with another through email, updates, and late evening biweekly meetings. Biweekly meetings serve as places to share successes, disappointments, seek advice, counseling, and resources, and to be springboards for larger collaborations.
The network has also allowed for the completion of very complicated interdepartmental projects such as the Zero Waste initiatives that include procurement, the caterers, facilities, and residential life. The network allows for greater access to resources such as relevant college finances and energy usage and food collection data than any single office could house. In addition, it is paid work, so students can be kept accountable for negligence and are rewarded for more effort. Finally, the network creates the opportunity to connect interested students, who don’t work for the network, with relevant departmental research for student projects. Information and work that has already been done by a professional department can be disseminated to students quickly and readily. |
