Abstract:

Sustainable State is a new educational model designed to provide both an online and face-to-face platform for interdisciplinary exchange and academic collaboration, centered around transformational sustainability education. The mechanics of the program rely heavily on both asynchronous and real time online interaction, and periodic face-to-face engagement in cross-disciplinary academic projects.
A strong emphasis is placed on re-framing the sustainability debate away from doom, gloom, and divisiveness, and towards the development of joyful, exhilarating collaborations in pursuit of common goals. All of these goals are tied to universal human rights and wellbeing, in order to inspire collaborations between radically diverse constituencies.
Through the program is still in its infancy, the administrators of the Sustainable State program hold a vision of growing the platform to encompass investigations into sustainability education across the following areas of culture and academia: Environment & Stewardship, Health & Healing, Relationships and Empowerment, Resources and Infrastructure, Finance and Business, Science and Technology, Communications and Media, Justice and Governance, Security and Peacekeeping, Learning and Education, Spirituality and Service, Culture and Art, and Whole-System Design.
Over the course of one year, the Sustainable State community of teachers and students explore of these sectors in turn, analyzing which areas of each sector need to be transformed, and in what way, to achieve a “sustainable state.” The final sector of exploration —“Whole-System Design” — is where the results of all this analysis are integrated and shared with the entire community. |
