10 Strategies for Sustainability Focused Faculty Development

Abstract | Word Stems | Keywords | Association | Citation | Get this Document | Similar Titles

Abstract:

Even on campuses with great sustainability initiatives, curriculum is often the missing piece or the one area that lags behind operations and student life. Working with faculty on curriculum changes can be frustrating but it also has a lasting and deep impact. This presentation will offer ten different strategies for effective faculty development intended to help integrate sustainability into the curriculum. Strategies range from multi-day summer workshops to one hour brown bag seminars, from discipline specific trainings to interdisciplinary experiential activities. Specific examples of implementation will be provided for each strategy. One premise of this talk is that there is no “silver bullet” for sustainability in the curriculum. Rather, what is needed is a long-term effort that uses multiple approaches and a wide array of potential strategies allowing for choice depending on an individual school’s faculty culture and existing faculty development structure.
