"Breaking The Circle Of One": Am I The Only One On This Campus Who Believes In Sustainability?

Abstract:

As our educational institutions continue to grow and demands on our resources (both physical and non-physical) increase, it can feel like sustainability takes a back seat to what is perceived as more immediate needs. Educators, driven by a professional and/or personal need to promote sustainability at their workplace, often come up short as their attempts to engage and motivate others fail. Why do these attempts fail and are they really failures in the true sense? "Breaking the circle of one" (Mullen et al., 1997) is an attempt at redefining old relationships and breaking feelings of isolation. Institutions without obvious external faces dedicated to promoting sustainability (like an office of sustainability), may appear to offer little in the way of encouraging sustainability practices. But do they? This session tracks the journey of one adjunct faculty on her quest to discover if there is support for sustainability in her institution. Delivered as a diary of events, this account highlights the importance of activism, the critical role organizations like AASHE play, and the surprising capacity of the campus community.
