Realizing sustainability across curricula and campuses, lessons from George Mason University in Northern Virginia

Abstract | Word Stems | Keywords | Association | Citation | Similar Titles

Abstract:

In 2007, the university leaped into sustainability initiatives with a commitment to climate neutrality, hiring of full-time energy and sustainability managers, and creation of “sustainability across the curriculum” faculty workshops. The next year began a series of two-year fellowships for faculty to work half time through the Provost’s Office to promote sustainability studies across multiple campuses. These investments’ impacts were rapid and dramatic: The greenhouse gas emissions trajectory leveled off, new academic programs proliferated, and sustainability features literally rose and blossomed across campuses. Focusing on learning and scholarship, this presentation highlights the challenges, accomplishments and lessons learned of this ongoing university transformation. Specific attention is paid to the potential for transferring emerging useful practices to similar institutions of higher learning elsewhere. Status per AASHE STARS rating and prospects for near-term advances are also discussed.
