Rethinking Organizational Boundaries: Forging Ties between Niklas Luhmann’s Theory of Organized Systems and Organizational Theories

Abstract | Word Stems | Keywords | Association | Citation | Similar Titles

Abstract:

This article explores the opportunities of forging ties between Luhmann’s theory of organized systems and organizational theories. In a systematic way, it examines their salient points of divergence and correspondence and points out the opportunities for Luhmann’s theoretical proposal to shed light on contemporary analysis of organizations. Luhmann’s notion of organizations as autopoietic systems and its associated concepts are introduced and explained along with suggestions for further developments. Overall, this article represents an attempt to advance a more active and fertile dialogue among different perspectives on organizational theory. It is proposed that this kind of integrative effort could provide valuable insights for more creative intellectual and empirical arrangements focused upon the analysis of organizations in modern society.
